Where do Plumbing leaks come from?
Do you look around your home in fear and wonder when water will come bursting forth? Luckily, it is not as common as you might think. And, with just a small effort in making sure to stay diligent with repairs, you may see them even rarely. But they do and will happen. So, what can leak and how do you know where it is coming from?
First we need to talk about the nature of water. Water is an interesting substance; it is a liquid substance that has unique qualities. Water is used everywhere in your home, which is kind of cool when you realize this substance was able to create the Grand Canyon. What makes water interesting is that it always travels the path of least resistance which means it may come from a pipe in one area and flow down to the floor into another.
Knowing that now, what are the signs of a leak?
Wet floors and floor boards:
- Look around for the more obvious puddles, or less obvious water lines close to the floor boards of a room. Water can run the line of a wall.
Bubbling paint and soft walls:
- If you see paint bubbling, discolorations, or walls that are soft to the touch. It can be a sign of a leak.
Sounds of water pouring or hissing:
- Hearing a constant hissing sound while near a wall? Maybe, you hear water loudly pouring all of a sudden, this need to be looked into and to see if there are any nearby wet spots.
High water bills:
- A really obvious sign of a leak is seeing your water bill jump dramatically, with no obvious reason. Its best if that ends up being the case, to rule out irrigation before looking at calling your local plumber.
